Dead Rising—how a game that I've wanted to play for almost 20 years disappointed me.

WEEEEEEEEEELL. It's been years in the making. The first time I've heard about this game was back in 2006, when it was going to release on 360. I saw this amazing trailer on a DVD that came with one of the videogame magazines. It showed the gameplay and various ways you can kill zombies while that awesome "Gone Guru" song by Lifeseeker was playing in the background. "Gone Guru" instantly became one of my favorite songs and found its place on my playlist, and is not getting off of it any time soon, but Dead Rising went completely past me, despite me having a 360. I honestly think that this was the first and possibly the only time I wanted to play a game because of one song in the trailer. I literally have no idea why I haven't played it as a kid. What was I even playing as a kid? I got my Xbox 360 in 2008, I believe, and the first 3 games I got for it were Call of Duty: World at War, Mass Effect, and Ninja Gaiden 2. Most of the time I was playing some figh...

BloodRayne - forgotten bloody gem

Image
BloodRayne Let's just close our eyes and say it out loud: It's a game about a hot red-headed vampire chick, in leather, with two huge blades attached to her wrists, who is a member of a secret society dealing with the paranormal and who infiltrates into the 3rd Reich, killing all the genetically enhanced commanding officers of a secret anti-ghost group, trying to stop Hitler from collecting demonic artifacts and becoming Mega Hitler. I used to practice lucid dreaming back in the day, so my dreams are usually very vivid and very weird. This feels like one of those dreams. Not gonna lie, if I were a game publisher and some guys ran into my office, waving a desdoc in front of my face while screaming that they've got the best idea in the world, I would probably get security or a loony bin. But after I would actually read it, I would throw my money into them and ask them to create a game that would be released to mixed reviews, fall into obscurity after a questionable sequel, ge...

Sifu - mastering yourself

Image
"Be a teacher for a day.  Be a father for life".  This quote from Sifu instantly found its place deep down my brain. This game is like a teacher to you. It shows you what to do, how to do it, and when to do it, but it never holds your hand and leads you all the way. It needs you to learn everything yourself. It needs you to fail. It needs you to get up, keep trying, and keep going forward. No quitting. It pushes you just enough for you to be frustrated at it, but you want to prove yourself, so you don't give up.  Once you accept the rules, the game begins. And the rules are fairly simple: 1) keep going forward; 2) don't die; 3) defeat your enemies. But the game is structured in such a way that you will have to break them to see everything.  Rule number 1: Keep going forward. Sifu will satisfy you in every way if you like martial arts. The moves that you unleash on your opponents are brutal, even cruel sometimes, and when you see them for the first time, it can...
